Sa ala saaa'ilum bi'azaa binw-waaqi'
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement,
Lilkaafireen laisa lahoo daafi'
(a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert;
Minal laahi zil ma'aarij
a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps,
Ta'rujul malaaa'ikatu war Roohu ilaihi fee yawmin kaana miqdaaruhoo khamseena alfa sanah
by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years.
Fasbir ssabran jameelaa
So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance.
Inaahum yarawnahoo ba'eedaa
Verily they think that the chastisement is far off,
Wa naraahu qareebaa
while We think that it is near at hand.
Yawma takoonus samaaa'u kalmuhl
It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass,
Wa takoonul jibaalu kal'ihn
and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool,
Wa laa yas'alu hameemun hameemaa
and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends
Yubassaroonahum; ya waddul mujrimu law yaftadee min 'azaabi yawma'izim bibaneeh
although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children,
Wa saahibatihee wa akheeh
and his spouse and his brother,
Wa faseelathil latee tu'weeh
and his kinsfolk who had stood by him,
Wa man fil ardi jamee'an summa yunjeeh
and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself.
Kallaa innahaa lazaa
By no means! It will be the fierce flame
Nazzaa'atal lishshawaa
that will strip off the scalp.
Tad'oo man adbara wa tawallaa
It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated,
W jama'a fa aw'aa
and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it.
Innal insaana khuliqa haloo'aa
Verily man is impatient by nature:
Izaa massahush sharru jazoo'aa
bewailing when evil befalls him,
Wa izaa massahul khairu manoo'aa
and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him,
Illal musalleen
except those that pray,
Allazeena hum 'alaa Salaatihim daaa'imoon
and are constant in their Prayer;
Wallazeena feee amwaalihim haqqum ma'loom
and those in whose wealth there is a known right
Lissaaa 'ili walmahroom
for those that ask and those that are dispossessed,
Wallazeena yusaddiqoona bi yawmid Deen
those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense,
Wallazeena hum min 'azaabi Rabbihim mushfiqoon
and fear the chastisement of their Lord –
Inna 'azaaba Rabbihim ghairu maamoon
surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from –
Wallazeena hum lifuroo jihim haafizoon
and those who guard their private parts,
Illaa 'alaaa azwaajihim aw maa malakat aymaanuhum fainnahum ghairu maloomeen
except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable,
Famanib taghaa waraaa'a zaalika fa ulaaa'ika humul 'aadoon
but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors,
Wallazeena hum li amaa naatihim wa 'ahdihim raa'oon
and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants,
Wallazeena hum bishahaadaatihim qaaa'imoon
and those who are upright in their testimonies;
Wallazeena hum 'alaa salaatihim yuhaafizoon
and who take due care of their Prayer:
Ulaaa'ika fee jannaatim mukramoon
all these shall live honourably in the Gardens.
Famaa lil lazeena kafaroo qibalaka muhti'een
But what is the matter with the unbelievers who are hurrying towards you
'Anil yameeni wa 'anish shimaali 'izeen
in crowds, both on the right and on the left?
Ayatma'u kullum ri'im minhum anyyudkhala jannata Na'eem
Does everyone of them wish to enter the Garden of Bliss?
Kallaaa innaa khalaq nahum mimmaa ya'lamoon
By no means! They know that which We have created them from.
Falaaa uqsimu bi Rabbil mashaariqi wal maghaaribi innaa laqaadiroon
I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We have the power
'Alaaa an nubaddila khairam minhum wa maa Nahnu bimasbooqeen
to replace them by others who would be better than they; and We shall certainly not be overpowered.
Fazarhum yakhoodoo wa yal'aboo hattaa yulaaqoo yaw mahumul lazee yoo'adoon
So leave them to engage in vain talk and to amuse themselves until they come face to face with the Day which they are promised,
Yawma yakhrujoona minal ajdaasi siraa'an ka anna hum ilaa nusubiny yoofidoon
the Day on which they will hastily come forth from their graves, as though they were hurrying on to the altars of their deities.
Khaashi'atan absaaruhum tarhaquhum zillah; zaalikal yawmul lazee kaanoo yoo'adoon
Their eyes will be downcast and disgrace will overwhelm them. Such is the Day that they were promised.
