The Cloaked One

Meccan

74:1

Yaaa ayyuhal muddassir
O you enveloped in your cloak!

74:2

Qum fa anzir
Arise, and warn,

74:3

Wa rabbaka fakabbir
and magnify the glory of your Lord,

74:4

Wa siyaabaka fatahhir
and purify your robes,

74:5

Warrujza fahjur
and shun uncleanness,

74:6

Wa laa tamnun tastaksir
and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return,

74:7

Wa li Rabbika fasbir
and persevere for your Lord's sake.

74:8

Fa izaa nuqira fin naaqoor
When the Trumpet shall be sounded,

74:9

Fazaalika yawma 'iziny yawmun 'aseer
that will surely be a hard day,

74:10

'Alal kaafireena ghayru yaseer
not an easy day for the unbelievers.

74:11

Zamee wa man khalaqtu waheedaa
Leave Me with him whom I alone have created,

74:12

Wa ja'altu lahoo maalam mamdoodaa
whom I have endowed with abundant riches,

74:13

Wa baneena shuhoodaa
and sons ever present with him,

74:14

Wa mahhattu lahoo tamheeda
and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches),

74:15

Summa yat ma'u an azeed
and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more.

74:16

Kallaaa innahoo kaana li Aayaatinaa 'aneedaa
By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs.

74:17

Sa urhiquhoo sa'oodaa
I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent.

74:18

Innahoo fakkara wa qaddar
He reflected and then hatched a scheme.

74:19

Faqutila kayfa qaddar
Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme?

74:20

Summa qutila kaifa qaddar
Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme?

74:21

Summa nazar
He looked (at others);

74:22

Summa 'abasa wa basar
then frowned and scowled;

74:23

Summaa adbara wastakbar
then he retreated and waxed proud,

74:24

Faqaala in haazaaa illaa sihruny yu'sar
and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore;

74:25

In haazaaa illaa qawlul bashar
this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!”

74:26

Sa usleehi saqar
Him shall I soon roast in Hell.

74:27

Wa maaa adraaka maa saqar
And what do you know what Hell is?

74:28

Laa tubqee wa laa tazar
It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact;

74:29

Lawwaahatul lilbashar
it scorches (even) the skin.

74:30

'Alaihaa tis'ata 'ashar
Over it are nineteen keepers.
